Overall we felt that the lads held their own against teams used to playing at a higher standard. At the top end of the age groups, the under 16’s, in their first pre-season friendly, did not keep the ball enough, which allowed Boston to control the opening stages and take a well worked goal on 15 minutes. As the game progressed, the Young Owls put their foot on the ball a lot more, played more composed football and applied sustained pressure in Boston’s final third, resulting in Leighton Buck scoring from close range. For the rest of the first half, the Young Owls dominated and played some wonderful football, with Morgan Somers standing out in midfield.

The second half consisted of the two midfields cancelling out each other’s impressive passing play. Declan Healy went closest for the Young Owls after a great run only for the Boston keeper to deny him a debut goal. Boston promptly counter-attacked and won a penalty with 10 minutes to go which they duly converted well. Young Owls pressed for an equaliser but were undone by 2 late Boston goals as fatigue set in.

At the lower end of the age group, the U11’s with 4 players away on holidays were expecting a tough task. Playing 3 x 20 minute periods though, the U11’s soon got into their stride with the key to their strong start being passing and moving.

Their first goal was made by a move down the left wing from Owen Darwent, getting right to the by-line before pulling it back inside, with a half clearance falling to Dan King who hit the ball on a half volley from outside the box, which the goal keeper managed to get an hand to but could stop. Dan scored another two goals to give him his first hat trick of the closed season.

Having played Harry Taylor in the centre of midfield for the most of last season, it was clear to see that he was at home in that position and was inspirational in bring the wingers into play. Rene Marsden was the main striker with Louis Ballard playing off of him and working well together, scoring 3 goals between them.

Owen Darwent from the wing came inside to score the first of his two with a dazzling display of pace, ball control and a glorious strike into the bottom corner to finish his run off.

It was an easy game for us, not taking anything away from Boston, but on the day we played our best game yet.

Other Scores: U10’s lost 7 – 3. U11’s won 8- 0. U12’s lost 3-2. UI3’s lost 4-3. U15’s (Sheffield Schools FA) won 3-1.
